What makes me 'Cool'...

Last month I was fortunate to work with Timothy Murray, a brilliant photographer and recent Brooklyn transplant from Austin, TX. The 'What makes me cool' photoshoot featured an array of artists, models and dancers that showcased their true passions in life. The entire shoot was a complete success and I couldn't be more proud of an amazingly talented photographer who captured my essence with the skillset of a beautifully trained eye. Please everyone, make sure to check out his impressive portfolio, like his Facebook Page and follow his blog here. Hope you are all having a lovely Tuesday, cheers!

Gettin Jeggy with it...

'Big things come in small packages', or so I've heard over a thousand times throughout my life. In my case, being tiny hasn't always been a blessing especially when it comes to clothes that don't fit. So when I scrolled through my Instagram feed and came upon a brand I fell in love with, I knew I had to make them mine.
James Jeans fit me like a glove at every angle all while elongating my petite figure. They're super stretchy too which helps when singing and dancing on stage, or in fields of grass which I often do in my day to day. (just kidding!) I highly recommend checking out all their new holiday styles, you will not be disappointed!

Vocal Trick or Treat!

When I'm not stomping around the city on Sundays, I always manage to find time to practice with my boyfriend, Andrew.(who also plays guitar in my band Radio Riot)

'Valerie' by Amy Winehouse has been one of my favorite songs for a while and I thought it was only fitting that since it is Halloween tomorrow, I would like to give my readers a little 'vocal treat'. Hope you enjoy and Happy Halloween!

(ps. sorry it cuts off at the end, eek!)

Fall-ing into Brooklyn

Last week I was able to spend some much needed quality time with my friend Alissa at Brooklyn's historical waterfront. We explored our way through Dumbo (down underneath the Manhattan bridge overpass, for those of you not familiar with NYC colloquialisms), ate pizza at world famous Grimaldi's and frolicked in the field next to Jane's carousel. The weather has been so amazing that it almost feels as though summer hasn't found its end. Before long, it will take a turn for snow in the blink of an eye. I prefer to spend as much time outdoors and enjoy every last moment before winter takes its toll!

Friendly Inspiration

While on vacation in California my friend Katie who later joined me my second week decided it would be fun to have a night in to ourselves, cook dinner and watch a movie. We opted to go to Trader Joe's because anyone who has ever been there would know the intense rush you receive from spending so little for SO much! Having been cooking on my own for the past four years it felt refreshing to try new recipes, especially those given to me with love from a trusted source.
Katie showed me how to make a simple, yet healthy and satisfying dish and I decided to cook it for lunch today and add my own little twist. I call it:

"Katie 'D'Light recipe for Success"!

What you'll need:

1/3 cup of olive oil
1/3 cup of organic balsamic vinaigrette
10 mini Brussel sprouts
8 baby mushrooms
5 cloves of garlic
*5-6 raspberries*
Spring of Rosemary

- Chop, chop, chop away at both Brussel sprouts and mushrooms until you have mini cubes of each.

- cut the cloves of garlic into thin slices 'ala goodfellas when they were doing time in jail scene'...lol

- turn the heat on the stove to medium.

- smear the frying pan with the 1/3 cup of olive oil, throw in the garlic slices and sprig of rosemary to create that robust flavor.

- next throw in the brussel sprouts and mushroom cubes.

- let simmer for two minutes

- sprinkle balsamic vinaigrette into the pan all the while keep stirring.

- here is my special twist, when I see everything start to get that brown color, I throw in the raspberries to add some sweetness to the dish.

Voila!! It should look something like this:

I recommend this fabulously healthy and delicious quick meal to anyone and everyone. I'm so happy I can share what I've learned from such a special friend to you and yours! Spread the love!! :-)

California Luv

Being a firm believer in reincarnation, I am certain of having lived in California over many lifetimes. The warm breezes of the ocean air to the mountains strewn along the shoreline was very clear to me when I first stepped foot onto Cali soil in 2009, that I need to live here someday. Two weeks under the sun (with 50 SPF!!) left me with an amazingly beautiful tan that has lasted me well into autumn. However, this particular vacation flew past me in the blink of an eye!
From the moment I stepped off the plane my friend Lexi drove me to the In N Out Burger, a mouth watering staple, inconveniently located only on the west coast. Afterwards we hiked Runyon Canyon to burn off those calories and oh boy did I hike all those trails during my entire stay... I certainly came back home with some serious buffed up legs! (and a nice booty too!)
During my first few days I explored around Venice beach and was able to snap some sweet shots of skateboarders in action, street art graffiti and even had my first surf lesson at the beach by the Santa Monica Pier. I also made time to meet up with one of my sweetest friends from college, Elise. We managed to catch up on our adventures within the last few years after graduating and later that day we ventured off to Hollywood Blvd where we felt like true tourists reading every star's name along the walk of fame. You can check out her amazing photography portfolio at Capture14.com. (Super happy to see her beautiful smile again!!)
Altogether my first week was full of divine intervention and it was very welcoming to feel alive and free from the everyday grind that NYC often serves up as a daily dish. Even though I am back in my city I've continued in adhering to a healthy diet of nutritious fruits, vegetables, well balanced meals and the occasional juicy burgers! ;-)

Coney Island Babies

Fall is soon approaching here in the big apple and I'm proud to say I have had some of the best memories this summer of 2013 that I will forever cherish. Before I left for my two weeks vacation to California (post coming soon!) I met up with Alissa and AlexValderana at Brooklyn's historical, oceanfront attraction, Coney Island. We had SO much fun shooting and eating Nathan's hot dogs and feeding eachother fries with those adorable little red pitchforks!

Check out some of the photos we took and more also located at ValderanaPhotos

Hydrangea- filled Reflections...

During the summertime I enjoy getting away from the city and heading to my parents house upstate in the beautiful Hudson Valley. My summer breaks during grade school were always long and filled with endless hours in the backyard, swimming or playing kickball in the street with the other neighborhood kids. I remember the time before the internet was introduced into every American household, when children were active and knew it was time to come home as soon as the sun set or else Mom (mostly Dad) would yell your name, never more than once!

My generation of 90's kids were the last to enjoy a solid youth, without the use of technology. I consider myself so blessed to revel in the joyful memories of sleepovers, watching nickelodeon night and day, sneaking into my big sisters room to watch MTV and writing plays to act out with friends. On this particular day it was warm and I was in such a 'country girl' mood. I threw on my favorite dress I bought a few years ago from Free People and decided to get silly with my hydrangeas in the backyard. Thank goodness I can always come back home to clear my mind and get focused on what matters most, time well spent with family and friends!

Back at the Ranch...

There is something so divine and magical about horses that I can't quite put my finger on but the weekend before last is certainly on my list of my top ten favorite memories of this year. My boyfriend Andrew and I drove out east in Long Island to visit a horse ranch and do research for a comic book he is currently illustrating in order to be published. Needless to say, I shot from every angle, all the while hoping not to scare the horses. (thank goodness for daylight and no flashes!)

Standing at only 5 feet tall and 95 lbs, I'm sure you can imagine how intimidated I was at first approach. I began with a simple hello, as if that were the best introduction with such a gentle giant, then extended my hand for them to smell (canine instincts?) and last I petted their muzzle to create that spiritual connection only horse lovers can understand. It was so intriguing to witness their everyday routine of exercise, feeding and hygiene and perceiving life from different angles. I walked away from this experience feeling so grateful for the abilities that we as humans, too often, take for granted. I hope this post has inspired YOU too to spend a day with horses and show them love and compassion, a most significant quality that is lacking in today's world.

ps. I had so much fun keeping company with this curious little kitten named Coal!
